Warm-Up: Mechanical Vocabulary
Brainstorm in pairs: what's the difference between a pump and a pipe? Between a spring and a wheel? You'll hear vocabulary like this in Section 2 monologues, especially when a machine, device, or process is being explained.
Common machine parts
pump
A device that moves liquid or gas, often used to push water up out of the ground or through pipes.
spring
A coiled piece of metal that stores energy when compressed. Used in everything from toys to suspension systems.
storage tank
A large container holding liquid (often at the bottom of a system).
grille
A grid of metal bars covering an opening — for ventilation or to keep things out.
winder
A handle or mechanism you turn to wind something up.
detonator
A small device that triggers something larger to fire or explode (e.g. in a party popper).
