Full Speaking Test Simulation + Band Feedback

Duration: 90 minutes Module: Speaking Focus: Simulating test day and receiving individualized band feedback

Objectives

Pair-work toolkit

Work in pairs on your phones. Use the count-up stopwatch to time each turn, and draw questions from the downloadable banks below.

Run the Part 2 long turn in pairs (strict timing)

How you'll sit this mock

Work in pairs. The paired mock player deals each of you a different, shuffled cue card, gives a strict one-minute preparation — the card appears, a 60-second clock runs and cannot be shortened — and then speaking begins automatically. While one partner speaks, the other times the turn and notes feedback on the four criteria. Then you swap.

Recording is optional and is never scored: in a live pair sitting the audio is too noisy to evaluate, so the player leaves marking to you and your partner. If you switch recording on, it is only for playing a turn back — it is not uploaded, saved to a server, or downloadable.

Swap & repeat for the other partner

After both partners have spoken, give each other a practice band using the checklist below — then your instructor records the authoritative mark. The gap between the two is where the learning is.

Band-Score Review

Observers and the trainer complete the band checklist for the test taker, then discuss. Score each of the four criteria on the 0–9 scale (most students land in Bands 5–8) with specific examples.

CriterionLook for (Band 7+)BandComments
Fluency & CoherenceLong turns stay coherent; hesitation is content-related, not language-related.
Lexical ResourceFlexible range; some less-common/idiomatic items; effective paraphrase.
Grammatical Range & AccuracyWide range used flexibly; frequent error-free sentences.
PronunciationClear with a range of features; easily understood; accent minimal.

Wrap-Up & Self-Evaluation

Complete a self-evaluation while the test is fresh, then set two specific goals for test day.

Self-evaluation & two goals

Reflect honestly on each criterion, then write your two goals. This saves so you can revisit it before the exam — and you'll expand it for homework.

You've finished the Speaking module

Across five days you learned the test format, IDEAS for Part 1, PPF for Part 2, and AREAS for Part 3 — then put them together in a full mock. Tonight's homework locks it in.
